We have reached a significant milestone, 100 years ago, in 1924, work began in Hungary. So in the year 2024, we will recall the important moments and events.
Already at its inception, the Salvation Army was badly needed in a country ravaged and mutilated by war, with unemployment, poverty and despair. The work grew year by year at the turn of the century, and many of our fellow countrymen found shelter and help in the churches and homes run by the Salvation Army. Sadly, however, a turning point occurred and 25 years later, in 1949, following the Communist takeover, our operations were discontinued. However, as soon as the opportunity arose, we were able to resume our church and charitable work in 1990. We now have 8 congregations and 5 social institutions across the country, made possible through the work of dedicated colleagues.
So this year we are 100 years old!
The Salvation Army Free Church of Hungary would like to commemorate the centenary in a worthy way, so we are organizing a series of Jubilee celebrations - 24-26 May 2024, where all interested are welcome!
- The series of events will start on Friday, 24 May 2024, at 15:00 in the afternoon, with the unveiling of a commemorative plaque at the first official Salvation Army premises, which was located on the ground floor of the house at 84 Dohány Street, 7th district.
- On Saturday, 25 May 2024, at 13:30 in the afternoon, the official celebration to commemorate 100 years will begin. International, European and territorial leaders of the Salvation Army or their delegates will be present. Representatives of the partner churches and missionary societies, as well as leaders from the areas with which we work. We welcome to our country all those foreign Salvation Army workers and leaders who have been active in helping the work to build and develop since its re-launch in 1990.
We will close the evening with a music festival starting at 18:30, featuring the Salvation Army Debrecen Church Praise Band, the Brass of Praise from Switzerland, the Golgotha Gospel Choir and Béla Pintér.
- On Sunday, May 26, 2024, there will be a joint worship service in the morning, and in the afternoon, four new pastors (officers) will be ordained.
On May 25 and 26, 2024, we will organize special activities for children and welcome all participants to our love receptions!
